Vol. IX, No. 4 July/August
2006
WE NEED YOU!! It's hard to believe that it's time to
start planning for the POA Board election in November. There will be three
openings in January, so interested candidates are encouraged to share their
expertise and creative ideas for the betterment of our community. Please
contact Bill Kamins at 681-5230 to let him know of your willingness to run for
the Board. Our community is growing so quickly-and there's a wealth of talent
our residents have to offer. Newcomers to the community and potential
candidates are welcome to attend a POA meeting to find out more about the Board
and its operating committees. Meetings are the fourth Tuesday of the month at
3:30 p.m. at the SCYC. There are also vacancies on the ARB, so interested
residents may call Jim Furlong at 689-9517 to discuss their credentials. Any
candidates should attend ARB meetings, which are held on the second Thursday of
every month at 8:30 a.m. at the SCYC.
COMMUNICATIONS Check
out our redesigned website at www.windmillharbour.org. While some pages are not
finalized, you can still contact us via the website. Please explore it and let
us know your comments and suggestions. From now on it will be easier to post
news bulletins (i.e. hurricane evacuations, lost pets), and the website will be
more informational and interactive. Don't forget to email Dee Eaton Kubic at
PAI d.kubic@paihhi.com your email
addresses so that we may set up a data base for notification purposes (i.e.
hurricane evacuation, Island re-entry, etc.) This directory will be for
confidential communications and community events and will NOT be shared with
any outside entity. Speaking of communications, please note that Deanna
Anderson of PAI is on site in Windmill Harbour every Wednesday from 8:30 to
10:00 at the SCYC. Residents are welcome to stop in and discuss any problems or
see pre-construction plans. MOA
NEWS According to new MOA
Board president, Don Baldwin, the MOA has approved the work on the lock by-pass
pipes that are in critical need of repair. Once the work starts, access will be
restricted on the north side of the lock for a period of 60-90 days. The north
pier and lock bridge may not be readily available during various periods while
the repair is in progress. We do not anticipate impact on lock operations
except for a few hours, at times, during the repair. It is anticipated that the
work will begin in August or September. In addition we will repair the planking
on the piers and replace the gazebo roofs. Please call the Harbormaster for
updates on lock closings or if you have questions.
MAINTENANCE
Algae and drainage problems with Lagoon #3 have been corrected, and the
lagoon has been resodded and replanted. During the last heavy rain it became
clear that, when the Sparwheel drains are open, street flooding is minimal. The
Maintenance Committee intends to raise the water level six inches above the
base level in Lagoon #3 without adversely affecting drainage of the Sparwheel
street system. Accordingly, they have lowered the sluice gate and will watch
this system during the next serious rain storm. The Maintenance Committee has
also completed a survey of the entire WH storm sewer system, resulting in an
accurate map of all drains, pipes and outflow points. They are obtaining bids
to clean the drains and outflow pipes to the marsh every six months, which was
successfully done to correct the flooding problem on Sparwheel.
SPEED BUMP Two appraisals have been completed to assess
whether the speed bump is over the three inches specified in the contract. As
it is slightly over, Savannah Hardscapes will grind it down.
SECURITY All walkers and joggers are encouraged to stay out
of the street and walk on our beautiful new brick walks. This is a traffic and
safety issue-your cooperation will be appreciated.
AROUND THE
NEIGHBORHOOD Thank you to Mark Woodruff, owner of Carolyn's Nursery
(and WH resident), who provided logustrum plantings at his cost along the fence
and around the maintenance facility in the Millwright outparcel. ***
Marcia Cornell is signing off for now. Email me news at
